Grooming your Min Pin’s coat is one of those *groan* laborious tasks where you (and probably your Min Pin) would rather be doing something else. But it’s one task that is vital if you want to keep your home and everything that’s in it as hair-free as possible. And not only that but keeping on top of grooming your Min Pin during heavy shedding seasons like the hotter months will leave their coat looking very shiny and lustrous as opposed to that dull look. Luckily for us Min Pin owners there isn’t as much fur to come out when shedding as some other breeds however it can quickly get out of control if a regular grooming regimen is not adhered to particularly during the summer. During the spring and autumn Mikki’s shedding increases again for a month or so as it does for all dogs but generally during the winter as the temperature settles and so does the shedding.
You can tell when your Min Pin’s coat needs a groom because you’ll see loose hairs on their bodies which actually contribute to that ‘dull’ look. In the UK where the temperature fluctuates, the shedding can become erratic where hair fall is worse some weeks than it is others. Before we began brushing Mikki’s fur more regularly we didn’t notice just how much fur he lost in a week. We’d brush him one day and 24 hours later he would have a lot of loose hairs again on his coat, beddings, crate and all over the floors. So we’ve had to commit to giving him an every other day grooming which has resulted in a massive improvement. It’s a common misconception that people who own short-haired breeds have where they think they only need to groom their dogs once a month. Well we couldn’t even imagine doing this now! But we did do the same once upon a time. We advise that the reader brush their Min Pin every other day time permitting. Having said that it takes under 10 minutes to groom our Min Pin so we believe that’s it’s doable for even the busiest of owners. Possibly more important than the regularity of grooming is the actual brushing technique. Many owners think a quick once over on one part of the body (usually the back) will suffice when in fact you need to get that groomer on all areas of the body, including your Min Pin’s head! You’ll be surprised by just how much hair they lose from their ears and other areas you don’t expect.
This is how we do it. You do not need to groom in order of photos however you should focus on all these areas. But you can start from the head, work your way down to the back of the body and then lastly the underbelly. We recommend that you take your time and meticulously work on each body part checking the groomer/brush to see how much hair is coming out. When you begin to see less hair you can move on to the next body part. It takes us around 10 minutes to groom Mikki and we’re lucky that he’s calm (ish!) and well behaved. We also recommend you buy a groomer such as the one pictured because it’s honestly the best one we’ve found for a short-haired breed and works fantastically for Mikki.
